TV climb challenge on Harris hills

HARRIS in August will be the setting for a major piece of public mountain climbing with a continuous six-hour live broadcast of an assault on the overhang at Sron Uladail.

On Saturday 28th August, the programme will go out on BBC2 and go to the world via the BBC’s HD channel and live streaming on its website. And he programme will not only feature climbing but will include a series of short clips about the nature, landscape and general life of Harris. These will be filmed over the coming months and will probably also feature in a specific programme about Harris to be put out at a later date.
As hosts to the event a spokesman for the North Harris Trust said it has been impressed with the enthusiasm of the production company Triple Echo to respect the local culture and environment and to bring as much benefit to the local community as possible. As one example a meeting with the school has led to a number of ideas coming forward of how the school’s young people can benefit from the event.
The two climbers Dave MacLeod and Tim Emmett will also be attempting, earlier in the summer, five hard new routes on five islands in 5 days .
On Friday 13th March 2009, award-winning filmmaker Richard Else, who is behind the project, became the second person whose contribution to mountaineering and Mountain Culture is recognised by the prestigious Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture. As a world-renowned filmmaker and documentary producer Richard has been the eyes and ears for millions of viewers across Britain and internationally. His pioneering approach to filming in remote locations has enabled viewers to gain an insight into the most thrilling climbs, harshest weather conditions and the breathtaking energy of peaks from Patagonia to the Himalaya.
Richard is a multi award winner with films such as Wild Climbs, made for the BBC in Britain, which has won a total of 11 awards worldwide. Another of his films, The Edge, has been described by the Daily Mail as a ‘perfect documentary’ and received a Scottish BAFTA. I t was later described by the then culture minister, Chris Smith, as one of the ten most important programmes made for television. These are just a tip of the iceberg; Richard’s BBC investigation into nuclear power won him a Clarion Award recognising best practice in communicating the importance of corporate social responsibility, sustainable development, social inclusion and ethical debate.
Richard is also series producer of his own creation, BBC Scotland’s monthly primetime television series, The Adventure Show..
Sron Uladail is renowned as one of the toughest rock faces in the world. Dave Macleod and Tim Emmett will tackle the daunting overhanging crag in one of the largest outside broadcasts to be mounted in the Outer Hebrides. Sròn Uladail is a 215m (700ft) high gneiss rockface with 45m (150ft) of overhang. Mr Else explained what makes the Sròn such a difficult prospect. “Sròn Uladail is about 700 feet high,” he said. “It is the biggest overhanging cliff in the British Isles, with a distance of 150 ft from its base to the edge of its overhang.
“It’s also the holds that make it so hard. Doug Scott climbed it first, but he used artificial holds, which we don’t do now, and it took him three years to do it.” In fact, the broadcast of a live rock climb will be a world first, using the latest cutting-edge Outside Broadcast technology. The programme is being produced for BBC Scotland by Triple Echo, who are hugely experienced at working in remote and sensitive habitats.
Permission for the ground-breaking programme was granted on the basis that the producers agree a leave-no-trace commitment to protect the fragile local environment, with much equipment being flown in to prevent any erosion to the mountain trails and rare plant communities that live on them.
The programme will also feature a spectacular world record attempt by the two climbers from earlier in the summer. They will be endeavouring to ascend five other world class new routes in five Outer Hebrides islands in just five days for the Triple Five Challenge.
