Haggis McSporran is an inmate of the notorious Craig Dunain Psychiatric Hospital, along with his catatonic Uncle Angus. Haggis is an aspiring novelist but now he has decided to become a comedian. He befriends Craitur Face, a new manic inmate whose patter inspires him. Haggis and Craitur Face escape and make their way to London, where they argue and part company. Haggis travels on an upward trajectory to the pinnacle of comedy stardom. Craitur Face descends to the gutter. As he runs out of drugs and material, Haggis makes a botched suicide attempt and then decides to return to the place he was happiest - Craig Dunain. Craitur Face has also returned to the Highlands and is living with his Granny, a former associate of Al Capone, on her croft by Loch Ness. Craitur Face has set up Jacobite Radio, a pirate station, broadcasting from the croft. Craig Dunain is now derelict and only Uncle Angus remains. Haggis discovers him. Craitur Face discovers them both and they all go to Granny’s. Craitur Face and Haggis swap roles and, Craitur Face becomes a top TV Stand Up and Haggis McSporran becomes the voice of Jacobite Radio.

‘Sailing Dinghy’ by Ian Hamilton Finlay

Anns a' Phrìomh Ghailearaidh In the Main Gallery

30 an Lùnastal – 13 an t-Samhain 2010 30 August – 13 November 2010

Ian Hamilton Finlay 1925 - 2006

Ian Hamilton Finlay combines his love of the sea with his love of literature and the potency of words. In the 1960s he was widely known as one of Britain's foremost concrete poets, but went on to extend his ideas beyond the printed page to become objects in the world. His work, often collaborative and in a wide variety of materials including stone carvings, constructions and neon lighting, is a unique blend of art and poetry. Sailing Dinghy encapsulates the artist's passion for ships and the sea, the boat was used by Ian Hamilton Finlay himself and is accompanied by a poem which evokes its movement. Much of his early poetry concerns sailing and fishing boats.
